Should you Beware of the Independent Operator – or companies that send IO’s to your home?

Over the last 10 years, the Toronto home cleaning industry has figured out a way to reduce their labour costs dramatically and therefore offer incredibly low cleaning rates to customers while still making a significant profit.

By classifying workers at “independent operators” the company no longer takes on the following significant costs;

  • Employee training (technical training, safety training, behaviour in the home training, training to reduce damage to your home etc.)
  • Observing minimum hour laws which guarantees a minimum 4 hour shift for the worker
  • Travel time – as home cleaners are often asked to commute 1-2 hours between cleanings
  • Tools and Supplies – the company often requires the operator to pay for, transport, use and clean/maintain their own tools and supplies for the cleaning
  • Paying taxes – the company is not required to make federal tax deductions from the employees earnings which include income tax deductions, EI and CPP deductions
  • Contributing to WSIB
  • Paying for overtime
  • Paying for vacation pay
  • Paying for statutory holiday pay. As you may know, this is 9 days per calendar year

Having independent operators in your home may make the home cleaning company toronto happy, but likely not the home cleaner– or you.
